The Order of Our Lady of Mount Carmel has its cradle on Mount Carmel in Palestine where hermits used to live in caves hewn out from rocks. In imitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary they lived a life of intimacy with God in silence and solitude. As a counter-balance of their life of unceasing prayer, they also engaged themselves in some kind of manual labor. No matter in prayer or in work their souls were in constant communication with God. These hermits were given a rule of life in 1209 A.D. In 1562 St. Teresa of Avila founded the first monastery of the Discalced Carmelite Nuns in Avila, Spain. Her monasteries are now spread all over the world. Patterned after the life of the first hermits, the cloister becomes the hermitage for Carmelite Nuns. They withdraw themselves from the hustle and bustle of the world in order to be able to pray better for all those who live in it. The call to Carmel is a call to follow Christ in a life dedicated exclusively to prayer by means of which a Carmelite fulfills her special apostolic function in the Church which embraces the whole world. Note: “Discalced” means “shoeless,” as we wear inexpensive sandals. Here is the story of the journey of Hawaii's Carmelite Nuns.
