This Video shows the main part which is the Buddhist temple (Wat) atop of the hill. This part holds historical significance and is part of the Khmer national identity. Here are some interesting details about Wat Phnom: Legend and Origin: According to legend, in 1372, a wealthy old lady named Daun Penh discovered a fallen koki tree floating in the river near her home. Inside the tree, she found four bronze statues of the Buddha. Amazed by this discovery, Daun Penh and her neighbors built a temporary shrine on a raised piece of ground near her house. The locals called the small hill Phnom Penh, which means “Penh’s Hill,” in her honor. Later, King Ponhea Yat ordered the enlargement of the hill and the construction of a wooden temple atop it. This temple, known as Wat Phnom, has undergone several reconstructions over the centuries and remains an important cultural site. Architecture and History: Wat Phnom stands on the only hill in Phnom Penh, which lent the city its name. The main temple was rebuilt multiple times, with renovations influenced by various rulers, including the Khmer Rouge and Pol Pot. The temple’s architecture reflects more than 600 years of history and includes elements from different periods. Inside the temple, you’ll find a large bronze Buddha, painted walls depicting his story, and murals recounting the Khmer version of the Ramayana. The shrine to Daun Penh, the temple’s founder, is an essential part of Wat Phnom, often crowded with people leaving offerings and paying tribute to her. Other features include a shrine dedicated to the spirit or genie Preah Chau, believed to offer protection from enemies, and a flower clock gifted by France in the 1960s. Visiting Wat Phnom: Wat Phnom is located north of Road 102, Norodom Boulevard, in the center of Phnom Penh. The temple is open from 7 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Entrance fee: $1, and $2 for the on-site museum at the base of the hill. Prepare for a somewhat chaotic scene when you arrive and begin the walk to the top of the hill. Enjoy exploring this historic temple and its beautiful surroundings! 🌸🏯🙏 #watphnom #phnompenh #cambodiaculture #buddhisttemple #khmerheritage #DaunPenhLegend #CambodianHistory #travelcambodia #ExplorePhnomPenh #TempleHill
