Today we rode the Fall Colors Steam Special Pulled by the Nickel Plate Road 765. This ride goes on the old New York Central which is now the Indiana Northeastern from Pleasant Lake, IN to Hillsdale, MI and back. In the small town of Bankers, MI a farmer had all of his tractors on display and a sign that says “Hi train people!” We stopped on the return trip in Ray, IN where they did two photo run-bys. The second one was better because it had more black smoke. After it went by I got a cinder shower. Cinders were stuck in my hair. Once we arrived back to Pleasant Lake, they coupled up INE GP9 #1602 to get water in Ashley, IN and turn the train around for the next days excursion in Hillsdale, MI. We saw them heading to Ashley in Steubenville, IN. Short Background on NKP 765: NKP 765 is a S-2 Berkshire with a 2-8-4 wheel arrangement built by the Lima Locomotive Works of Lima, Ohio in September of 1944. It was built for the New York, Chicago, & St. Louis Railroad otherwise known as the Nickel Plate Road. The Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society acquired 765 in 1973 and restored it to operation condition. It now runs often. The Federal Railroad Administration requires steam locomotives to have an entire rebuild/ inspection about every 15 years. The 765 was last rebuilt, I believe in 2005. If I'm not wrong, its next rebuild should be around 2030 or 2031. If you want more info on NKP 765, go to Fort Wayne Railroad Historical Society's website. They have a very detailed description of the locomotive. Filmed Saturday, October 18th, 2025. Thanks for watching and I hope you enjoyed! Like and subscribe p.
