Many productivity systems talk about consistency as if the goal is to find the perfect planning method and stick with it forever. Over the past year, experimenting with different planning systems has made me rethink that idea. In this video I reflect on something I’ve started to notice: planning systems work in cycles. A method that works well for a while can suddenly stop working — not because the system is bad, but because our priorities, habits, and circumstances have changed. Over the past year I’ve experimented with a number of approaches to planning and productivity, including time blocking, the Ideal Week, a Five Box Day, and a Four Column Week. Each of them worked well at certain times… and less well at others. In this video I talk about: • why productivity systems sometimes stop working • what changed my thinking about ideas like the 12 Week Year • how different levels of structure fit different phases of life • why adjusting your planning system mid-cycle isn’t failure • and why consistency may actually mean responding to change The more I experiment with planning methods, the more convinced I am that the goal isn’t finding one system that works forever. Instead, it’s learning how to recognize what kind of structure you need right now. If you’ve ever felt like your productivity system stopped working — or wondered whether you were doing something wrong when a method stopped helping — this might resonate.
