Affliction is a metaphysical poem written around 1625 by George Herbert and was published in his 1633 collection of poems, The Temple. Affliction means pain and difficulty or something that causes it. The poem was written at the time when he was in the process of making a major change in his life. The poem has eleven stanzas of six lines each, making sixty-six lines in total. The rhyme scheme of the poem is ABABCC. The poem is autobiographical in nature and reflects on his life and his relationship with God. The first three and a half stanzas celebrate George Herbert’s success as a young man. In the next stanzas, he experiences deep misery and talks about his illness, death of friends and loneliness.
