It was discovered by accident in 1880 by Travis Mellion, when his daughter Opal fell ill with a form of tuberculosis. He asked for advice from nearby campers, and they suggested the spring that oozed from the bank of the Fishing River. Water was collected and brought to his daughter to drink. Over the course of a few weeks, there was noticeable improvement to her health, and she was eventually cured. More springs were found and eventually the city had dozens of hotels and spas catering to those who looked for the curative affects of the spring waters. One of the best preserved Art Deco buildings in the entire state of Missouri can be found in the historic Hall of Waters. Another feature shown on the walk is the historic Elms Hotel and Spa. President Truman used this hotel from time-to-time to play poker with his buddies.
