Croatia : Magical Rovinj

Rovinj is an ancient town situated on the western coast of the Istrian Peninsula in Croatia. The town was originally situated in an island but the channel was filled in 1763 and connected with the mainland ever since. Originally founded by the Romans, the town was later ruled by the Byzantines and the Franks. From 1283 until 1797, it was under Venetian rule. During this period, three town gates were constructed and the town was fortified by two rows of defensive walls, remains of which can still be seen today. After the fall of Venice in 1797, the town became part of the Austrian Empire until World War I. Since 1918, the town was under the control of the Kingdom of Italy until 1947, after which it became part of the then Yugoslavia and now Croatia. The major landmark of Rovinj is the Church of St Euphemia on the hilltop. The saint's remains are preserved in a Roman sarcophagus in the apse. The adjacent bell tower was modelled on that of San Marco in Venice. The town has a charming fishing harbour, lined with restaurants and gelateria. It also has many cobblestoned alleys for visitors to explore, many of them leading up to the hilltop church. One of them is Grisia Street, with many galleries, ateliers and souvenir shops lining the street. After sunset, Rovinj comes to life, with the harbourfront and piers frequented by holiday makers and tourists.
