Have you ever wondered why organic food is so expensive? Or, what the real difference between organic and non-organic food is? Well, you're not the only one! Organic food is certified through the United States Department of Agriculture or USDA. This process can take up to three years! The farmer must ensure that the crops or animals are raised using only organic methods. This means limited fertilizers, pesticides, or other substances found on the approved list. Many substances a conventional farmers uses are prohibited for organic production. When it comes to raising animals for organic products, the rules are again very strict. No growth hormones or antibiotics allowed. The animals also have to be raised on organic feed and have access to sunlight, shade, shelter, and the outdoors. Hopefully this clears up what we are really guaranteed when we buy organic food! The National List of Allowed and Prohibited Substances https://www.ecfr.gov/cgi-bin/text-idx...
