Character Study Monologue - Saving Joe!

This is a character study I have done for my Introduction to Dramatic Process course at Concordia University of Edmonton. It is a university study, not meant for profit. I wrote the monologue. The story is inspired by two poems by Langston Hughes, “Deferred” and “Ballad of the Landlord”. My character is an old and decaying building who is afraid of being demolished. If the building is demolished, a more modernized building or a fancy restaurant might be built in its place. It might be progress for the neighborhood, but not for the residents because they would not be able to afford the more expensive rent. The possible demolishing of the building means the displacement of these people. That’s why they need to get Joe out of jail. Joe is a Black man who was unjustly imprisoned. As a very influential resident in the building, Joe played an important role in the neighbor’s association. Without Joe, the association loses its strength. The building may be demolished, the residents may get evicted, and these people’s dreams may not become true. The building, his fellow buildings and the residents need to save Joe! Eu escrevi o monólogo. A história é inspirada em dois poemas de Langston Hughes, “Deferred” (“Adiado”) e “Ballad of the Landlord” (“Balada do Senhorio”). Meu personagem é um prédio velho e decadente, cujo medo é ser demolido. Se o prédio for demolido, um prédio mais moderno ou um restaurante chique podem ser construídos no seu lugar. Isso pode ser um progresso para o bairro, mas não para os moradores, pois estes não seriam capazes de pagar o aluguel mais caro. A possível demolição do prédio significa o despejo dessas pessoas. É por isso que eles precisam tirar Joe da cadeia. Joe é um homem negro que foi preso injustamente. Enquanto um morador influente do prédio, Joe era uma figura importante para a associação de moradores. Sem Joe, a associação perde sua força. O prédio pode ser demolido, os moradores podem ser despejados e os sonhos dessas pessoas podem não se tornar realidade. O prédio, seus companheiros-prédios e os moradores precisam salvar Joe!
