Join me on the most challenging and epic journey of my life: tackling the Canning Stock Route solo in my Ford Ranger! In this multi-part series, I'm taking on the full 1,850km of one of the world's most remote and legendary 4WD tracks, from Wiluna to Billiluna in the heart of Western Australia's vast deserts. ​This isn't just a road trip; it's a test of skill, endurance, and preparation. I'll be navigating over 900 sand dunes, crossing three major deserts—the Gibson, Little Sandy, and Great Sandy—and relying on my wits and my trusty Ranger to get me to the finish line. ​But the Canning Stock Route is more than just a track. It's a living piece of Australian history. The route was first surveyed in 1906 by Alfred Canning to create a path for drovers to move cattle from the Kimberley stations in the north to the markets in the south. His party, with the help of Aboriginal guides, dug and constructed a series of 51 wells spaced roughly a day's walk apart. ​While it was only used for a few decades for its intended purpose, it left a lasting legacy. Today, the route is a pilgrimage for adventurers, with each well and rockhole telling a story of the past. The history here is complex, a mix of pioneering determination and the devastating impact on the Aboriginal peoples whose lands and water sources were forever changed. ​In this series, you'll see the highs and lows of a solo expedition: breathtaking desert landscapes, the constant challenge of corrugations and soft sand, and the incredible solitude of the Australian outback. From the first turn-off at Wiluna to the final stretch to Billiluna, you'll get a raw and unfiltered look at what it takes to complete the Canning Stock Route.
