In this interview, Shillah Tiitwe, a maternity health worker from Uganda, speaks about the realities of pregnancy, childbirth, and postnatal care as they are lived on the ground. The conversation explores when and why women arrive late for care, the most common complications seen in maternity wards, and how shortages of staff, equipment, and follow-up affect outcomes for mothers and babies. It also looks at teenage pregnancy, stigma, family pressure, and the emotional weight carried by nurses who are often the first to witness deeper crises in women’s lives. Beyond clinical care, the discussion touches on dignity, women’s rights in maternity settings, cultural expectations around motherhood, and how global and economic instability increases vulnerability in healthcare systems. This interview is part of Selalelo’s ongoing work to centre women’s lived experiences and to make visible the everyday systems that shape safety, care, and survival for women and children across Africa.
