Product Managers: 1. Talk to Customers and solve their problems When ideating a new product or a feature, PMs can work with User Research teams to interview customers or run surveys to test a hypothesis or even to discover trends and areas of opportunities. During development of these features and products, Product Managers will talk to users to test designs, functionality and get feedback. After launching these new products and features to the market, PMs will continue engaging with their customers and users to get feedback and to continue the cycle of improving their products. Internally, to their team, Product Managers are the voice of the customer and are expected to make decisions that will benefit the users. 2. Are the best storytellers and influence others: Product Managers are the storytellers in the group. From the smallest of details to the big picture, Product Managers create artifacts, documents, presentations, tasks and stories to make sure that every stakeholder understands: "What" product or feature is being built, "Why" we are building it, and "When" is it going to be delivered. Product managers also talk many business languages. We have to constantly communicate with all kinds of disciplines in different ways: A Feature description for engineering with all the technical details, a business plan for the leadership team, a product description document for marketing, a COGS analysis for finance or even an email to the sales team offering help to address a customer's concerns. 3. Business, Metrics and OKRs (Objectives & Key Results): Product management is, at its core, a business function. Your job as the PM of a Feature or a Product is to understand and define the business around it. Product Managers understand the value that their features bring to their customers and make sure that their products are aligned to the company strategy. We also do market research and analyze our competitors to figure out the best way to protect our market or increase our customer base 4. Build roadmaps and prioritize: Building a roadmap and a backlog is more than just adding tasks to a list and launch a feature. PMs work with Engineering, Design, UX, Data Science and other teams to come up with a comprehensive list of features, stories and tasks that will take the team from idea to launching their feature. Prioritizing the backlog is not just about shipping the feature or the product faster. Product Managers need to balance multiple priorities that affect the backlog. These priorities can be customer requests that will gain quick wins for the business, catching up on technical debt, Short term and long term projects, bug fixing and tasks to make progress on the feature. 5.
