What is SIPS? SIPS (Stomach intestinal pylorus-sparing surgery) also know as Single-Anastomosis Duodenal Switch. This surgery is a modified version of existing bariatric techniques. SIPS is similar to the duodenal switch surgery. It involves the creation of a sleeve gastrectomy that is larger than the average sleeve. During the surgery an attachment is achieved below the pyloric valve. This valve controls the movement of food into the small intestine. The preservation of the pyloric valve prevents blood glucose spikes. What to expect SIPS surgery is very similar to other forms of bariatric surgery. SIPS Surgeries are performed either laparoscopically or robotically. This minimally invasive technique is optimal for a quick and safe recovery. The SIPS surgery usually takes 1 and half hours to complete. Recovery The SIPS surgery is minimally invasive which means the recovery period is usually very swift. Patients are discharged within one to three days. Patients can resume work and regular activities within one to two weeks. Results The results of the SIPS surgery include benefits such as: More weight loss when compared to sleeve gastrectomy or gastric bypass Higher remission rate of diabetes Less fluctuations in blood sugar when compared with the gastric bypass
