Prepreg Composite Layup with Robotic Gripper and Handling Tools

Although the exceptional strength-to-weight characteristics of composite materials make them ideal for aerospace components, manufacturing and material handling challenges can make implementation of such materials difficult. Southwest Research Institute developed a robotic solution for prepreg composite layup utilizing a consolidation tool and a patent-pending gripper tool which are used to handle and place the material to a mold. The tools are mounted to the end of industrial robots programmed using ROS packages Noether and Tesseract. Using a combination of CAD and manually generated trajectories, the robotic system can lay up prepreg material in a very repeatable manner.
