Trying to light a cigarette with a wet lighter. Strike it all you want - nothing happens. You have to wait for it to dry. That's exactly what motivation is like when you're burnt out. I remember being in the mental health clinic. No phone allowed. Before that, I'd scroll endlessly past motivation posts. Thinking: "Fuck you. You don't know what this feels like." Everyone says: motivate yourself, work yourself up, get inspired. When you're burnt out to the point of no return, no amount of motivation will get you out. Why motivation doesn't work when overloaded: You don't have the energy. You don't have the will. Your brain is foggy. You're stuck. Waiting for motivation to arrive = waiting forever. It's never coming. What works instead: Kickstart the engine. Small incremental steps. Not nice. Not inspiring. But it's the only thing that works. The method: 1. Stay away from things dragging you down 2. Start with smallest possible tasks 3. Tick off small boxes 4. Free up resources 5. Clear your mind 6. Make space for more Think of muddied pool water (your brain). As sediment settles, it becomes clearer. Do small thing → clear it → next thing → next thing → bigger things → getting things done. Sounds simple. Might sound foreign if you're in it now. But trust me: it's the only thing that works. You have to kick yourself in the backside. That's the only thing that works. Cannot wait for motivation. It doesn't exist when burnt out. Create your own momentum. Push forward even without energy. Stop waiting. Start doing. Motivation is never coming when you're burnt out.
