വിശ്വവിഖ്യാതമായ രാമായണകഥയിലെ ശ്രീരാമഭക്തനായ ബാലി തെയ്യമാണ് ബാലി. സുഗ്രീവസഹോദരനായ ബാലി, രാമബാണമേറ്റ് വീരമൃത്യു വരിച്ചപ്പോൾ, ആ ധീരനെയും ശ്രീരാമദേവനെയും ആരാധനയുടെ പദവിയിലേക്ക് ഉയർത്തിയതാണ് ബാലി തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ മഹിമ. ഭൂമിയെ കുലുക്കിയൊരു പിറവികൊണ്ട ജനിച്ച ബാലനാണ് ബാലി. പുണ്യതീർത്ഥമായ വടുവക്കോട്ടയിൽ കുളികുറിതേവാരം കഴിച്ച് ബാലി എത്തുമ്പോൾ അവിടെ ഭക്തനുമായ മണ്ണുമ്മൽ പ്രാധാനനായ വിശ്വകർമാവിനെ കാണുന്നു. വിശ്വകർമാവിന്റെ കെട്ടും ചുറ്റും കുറിയും ആചാരങ്ങളും കണ്ട്, അതിന്റെ മഹത്വം മനസ്സിലാക്കിയ ബാലി അദ്ദേഹത്തിനൊപ്പം എരമം മണ്ണുമ്മൽ സ്ഥാനത്ത് തുടരുന്നു. പിന്നീട് മോറാഴ, കുറുന്താഴ, വടക്കൻ കൊവ്വൽ തുടങ്ങിയ സ്ഥലങ്ങളിൽ പീഠം സ്ഥാപിച്ച് വിശ്വകർമജരുടെ കുലദൈവമായി കൂറ്റുകാട്ടി ക്ഷേത്രത്തിൽ രക്ഷകനായി നിലകൊള്ളുന്നു. തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ ചെറിയ രൂപമാണ്‌ വെള്ളാട്ടം. അതായത് തെയ്യത്തിന്റെ ബാല്യവേഷം. എങ്കിലും എല്ലാ തെയ്യങ്ങൾക്കും വെള്ളാട്ടമില്ല. ചില തെയ്യങ്ങൾക്ക് തോറ്റം, വെള്ളാട്ടം, തെയ്യം എന്നിങ്ങനെയും മറ്റു ചിലത് തോറ്റം ,തെയ്യം എന്നിങ്ങനെയുമായിരിക്കും. അപൂർ‌വ്വം ചില തെയ്യങ്ങൾക്കു മാത്രമെ തോറ്റം , വെള്ളാട്ടം ,തെയ്യം എന്നീ മൂന്ന് അംശങ്ങൾ കാണൂ. Bali Theyyam represents Bali, the devoted follower of Lord Rama, from the world-famous epic Ramayana. Bali, the brother of Sugriva, attained a heroic death after being struck by Lord Rama’s arrow. This valiant figure was then elevated to a divine status, and worshipped alongside Lord Rama. Bali, born with a roar that shook the earth, later arrived at the sacred Vaduvakkotta after performing the holy Kulikuri Thevaram ritual. There, he met the devoted Vishwakarma, who was the leader of the Mannummal clan. Witnessing the traditions, rituals, and architectural marvels of Vishwakarma, Bali decided to join him and stayed at the Eramam Mannummal abode. Eventually, Bali was venerated as the family deity of the Vishwakarma community, establishing shrines in Morazha, Kurunthazha, and Vadakkan Koval.
