The start of the new DTM From 1997 onwards there was a lot of discussion about what the new DTM should look like. Opel wanted to reduce costs, Mercedes-Benz wanted to invest a lot of money, BMW did not see anything in a class aimed solely at Germany and Audi wanted to use their trademark quattro all-wheel drive. Ultimately, Opel and Mercedes-Benz had an agreement on what the cars should look like, they would be based on two-door models. BMW and Alfa Romeo did not return and Audi also did not want to participate if only rear-wheel drive would be used. However, Abt Sportsline would come out and use the Audi TT-R. In 2000, DTM was revived, this time according to a different formula. They had learned from their mistakes and this time everything was done to make the cars spectacular, but cheap to produce and maintain. For example, ABS, traction control and four-wheel drive were all banned again. The cars now had 4.0 liter V8 engines and all cars had the same brakes and tires. For the transmission there was a choice between a Hewland system or one from X-Trac. 2000-2003 The new DTM started in May 2000 at the Hockenheimring. Some cars still had little or no sponsor stickers, but it would soon grow into the largest touring car class in Europe. The cars from Opel and Mercedes-Benz competed well with each other, but the hastily produced Abt Audis were usually outclassed. The first two years were won by the Mercedes CLK, but in 2003 there was success for the TT-R after changes were made to the aerodynamics. Audi joins, Opel leaves In 2004 the cars were modified, this time sedans were driven instead of coupes. Audi now officially took part with the Audi A4 DTM, while Mercedes opted for the C-class and Opel now competed with the Vectra. There was a setback at the end of 2005 when Opel withdrew due to budget cuts at General Motors. The gap seemed to be filled by Rover, but they went bankrupt. Audi and Mercedes continued together. There were plans at Alfa Romeo to participate in the 2007 season, which started later to give them extra time to develop a car, but this ultimately did not happen. Audi dominated in the years that followed, and it was not until 2010 that Mercedes won again. BMW returns The 2012 season saw a big change. The cars returned to coupe form, and BMW rejoined the DTM after a twenty-year drought. It would compete with the Audi A5 and Mercedes-Benz C coupe in the BMW M3 coupe. There was immediate success, as Bruno Spengler brought victory to BMW. The following year, Audi switched to the RS5 DTM, which became champion with Mike Rockenfeller at the wheel. The 2014 season saw a new car, the BMW M4 DTM, which again took victory in its debut year. Races Since 2015 there have been nine events, with each edition having a race on Saturday and a race on Sunday. Saturday's race lasts 40 minutes, and a pit stop is optional. The race on Sunday lasts 60 minutes, and a pit stop with tire change is mandatory. Traditionally the season opens and closes at the Hockenheimring. All teams use Hankook tires.
