As we ventured into the neighborhood, my guide expressed concern for my safety, but I wasn't deterred. We saw the harsh reality of life in the Cape Flats as we walked around the various hostels, witnessing the disturbing living conditions of up to 16 people crammed into one tiny room. But the most unforgettable moment came when I stepped into an illegal local bar, and every eye in the room was fixed on me. It's no surprise, as tourists and white people rarely venture this deep into the Cape Flats. But soon, the atmosphere shifted, and they started chanting my name, "Chris, Chris, Chris, Chris…" once I bought the first bottle of gin.
