Ian Meng, Ph.D., director of the Center of Biomedical Research Excellence (COBRE) for the Study of Pain and Sensory Function, studies ocular pain by mapping out the corneal nerves. The Meng Lab has the goal to develop new and more effective treatments for corneal pain. The study could also help explain why some forms of chronic pain — headaches and migraines, in particular — are so closely related to corneal pain and why they cause such severe emotional reactions. UNE students have the opportunity to work closely with research staff to use various techniques, like microscopy, and learn how to use the instrumentation that's needed to look at all of these neurons in the cornea. UNE received $6.6 million from The National Eye Institute to work on this study and research ocular pain.
