A thatch layer is normal and naturally builds up in warm season lawns. Thatch is actually a good thing. It protects the upper soil root system from extremes, such as excessive heat, and limits evaporation. The problem is when the thatch layer gets too thick, such as when a lawn is not renovated for many years, and the thatch is so thick that mowing is difficult, the lawn is spongey and air, water and nutrients cannot get to the soil. A thick thatch layer also is a breeding ground for disease if it is left wet for too long. Too thick of a thatch layer can really cause a lawn to struggle. Basically the thatch layer can choke the lawn and make it really unhealthy.
