The Incredible User Interface Design of Alien: Isolation | Game GUI Analysis

Alien: Isolation is an outstanding survival horror game that perfectly replicates the look and feel of the 1979 film. One of the key reasons for this is the incredible user interface design. What’s so remarkable about the game’s UI is that it’s deliberately difficult to use. By leveraging the film’s lore and recreating the lo-fi aesthetic it manages to use bad GUI design to enhance the experience. In this video, I explore how diegetic design has been used to limit the use of typical menus or a HUD. We look at how taking control away from the player can actually improve the experience. I compare it to other games, such as cyberpunk and I talk about what defines the survival horror genre.
