Cuba retains its iconic vintage cars primarily due to the U.S. trade embargo imposed after the 1959 revolution, which blocked imports of new American cars and parts, combined with Cuba's own restrictive policies. Cubans have kept around 60,000-70,000 pre-1960s vehicles running through remarkable ingenuity, swapping in Soviet-era engines and makeshift parts. Historical Roots The 1959 Cuban Revolution led to nationalization of U.S. assets, prompting the U.S. embargo in 1960-1962 that halted car imports and froze supply chains. Pre-revolution, Cuba imported many American classics like Chevrolets and Fords; post-embargo, the government controlled vehicle distribution, prioritizing Soviet models for elites while everyday cars became family heirlooms.
