SOUNDBITE (Arabic) Tariq al-Hashemi, Iraqi Vice-President: ''The security situation which has improved in the restive areas in Iraq and in Baghdad was due to the change of people's consciousness. So, the people instead of giving safe shelters to terrorism, they volunteered to combat terror. Consequently the government and other official organisations should support those people." 8. Officials leaving STORYLINE The Iraqi president and his deputy held talks with the Kurdish leader, Massoud al-Barzani on Monday in Suleimaniyah, north of Baghdad. Speaking at a news conference after the talks, Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said the three men had signed a memorandum of understanding aimed at "boosting long-term relations" between the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, the Kurdistan Democratic Party and Iraqi Islamic Party. "This move is aimed at achieving and implementing what had previously been agreed upon concerning the formation of a real national unity government," Talabani said. The meeting came, as reports said Turkish fighter jets had bombed Kurdish rebel targets in northern Iraq. A spokesman for Iraqi Kurdistan's Peshmerga security forces said the jets bombed an area about 85 kilometres (about 50 miles) north of Irbil near the border with Turkey on Sunday for about an hour and a half. He said there were no civilian casualties because the area was deserted due to a fear of Turkish attacks. During the news conference on Monday, Kurdish leader Massoud al-Barzani condemned the Turkish bombardment. "The bombing targeted safe and secure areas and innocent people. Several people were either killed or wounded," he said without referring to a particular incident. Al-Barzani said he held talks with Talabani and the Iraqi Vice President Tariq al-Hashemi and other concerned parties " to put an end to these aggressions and put to an end the shelling of villages". The Turkish military said on Saturday that hundreds of Kurdish rebels had been killed in December 16 operation and in an incursion into Iraq by Turkish land forces two days later. After a surge in attacks by the Kurish rebels, some of whom are based in northern Iraq, Turkey said it would tolerate any more Kurdistan Workers' Party or PKK attacks.
