4 Awesome Tom Petty Riffs You Need to Know [Guitar Lesson] Tom Petty was an American singer-songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, record producer, and actor. He was the lead singer and guitarist of Tom Petty and the Heartbreakers, formed in 1976. He also was a member of the late 1980s supergroup the Traveling Wilburys. In his career, he sold more than 80 million records worldwide, making him one of the best-selling music artists of all time. He and the Heartbreakers were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002. Petty died in 2017, one week after the end of the Heartbreakers 40th Anniversary Tour, from an overdose on prescription drugs. Tom Petty and his lead guitarist Mike Campbell had a recognizable style and sound to their guitars and guitar playing. Favoring jangly, open-string riffs, with common notes used in his chords progressions, Petty often removed thirds from his chords, giving them a more piercing sound.
