Summary: "Jihshok Lamshok" The Poanglum festival is celebrated by the Chang tribe in the 2nd week of January in Tuensang. The celebration marks the season of winter and a time of Post-harvest abundance. Historically, when we track back to the old days it sheds light on how the land is known as the 'Land of Festivals', the community did not observe any festivals, but it is modern times that have elevated the significance of this festival celebrations. Originally, the celebration of this festival was a conservative affair, marked by rituals it is celebrated with traditional folk songs and dances with men, women, and children with its full traditional attire. The Ancient Chang Celebration of the 'Poanglum' Festival is hosted by wealthy families with several people gathering at one place where only those experienced with folk dances and songs are selected and performed throughout the night to different tunes, lyrics, and styles. The festival was centered on a folk song/the anthem "Jihshok Lamshok", where participants praise the land of their ancestor's origin, recounting the story of their first ignited fireplace, praising the soil that sustains them. Traditionally, the festival involved rituals such as consuming local rice beer and sacrificing the healthiest pigs, buffaloes, and cows showcasing their abundance, the gathering is abundant with a variety of food reflecting the plentiful harvest, as the community preserves the best seeds for future planting. They even showcase to the point in the song stating with egocentrism that even meat-eating birds envy their plentiful feast. Throughout the year, the villagers of Tuensang engage in various activities like fishing and hunting, often boasting about their impressive catches. The community takes pride in their sharp nature and skills, showcasing tales of having hunted Tigers, Bears, and Wild Boars. This vibrant celebration of culture reflects their deep connection to the land and the challenges they face in sustaining their livelihood. Their accomplishment highlights a deep respect for nature and its skills. In the last, the 'Poanglum' festival was celebrated to ensure the passing down of Tuensang Village Culture and Tradition to the younger generation, where the legacy of the village will last from generation to generation.
