🏆 Subscribe: https://bit.ly/49prwh7 Born on August 24, 1916, in Amsterdam, Netherlands, Janny Brandes-Brilleslijper grew up in a vibrant Jewish family embedded in the city's artistic and intellectual circles. With a love for music and an unbreakable sense of justice, Janny’s life shifted dramatically under the German occupation of the Netherlands in May 1940. She quickly recognized the peril facing her community and became a steadfast member of the Dutch Resistance. Together with her sister, Lien, Janny established a series of safe houses and coordinated escape routes across Amsterdam. Their resourcefulness, deep knowledge of the city, and extensive network enabled them to shelter and assist Jews, as well as others at risk under the occupation. Their escape network grew with each passing month, and soon, they were guiding dozens to safety, securing forged documents, and organizing clandestine meetings. As German forces tightened their grip, Janny faced increasing danger. The Gestapo launched sweeping raids and brutal interrogations, often coming within a hair’s breadth of uncovering her network. Yet, Janny’s resolve held strong. She adapted quickly to shifting circumstances, changing locations, and refining her operations to keep those she protected one step ahead. In 1944, her work reached a tragic turning point. Betrayed by an informant, Janny, her sister Lien, and several associates were captured. After enduring intense interrogations, she was sent to Westerbork and eventually deported to Bergen-Belsen concentration camp. Her spirit and dedication to those around her never wavered, even under the most harrowing conditions. She survived the camp, emerging physically scarred but unwavering in her dedication to remember and honor those who had been lost. After the war, Janny became a symbol of defiance and courage, sharing her story to remind future generations of the power found in fighting for justice. Her legacy lives on as a testament to her commitment to her community and her unyielding stand against oppression.
