This past weekend we had the privilege of taking part in the Quebec City Winter Carnival (Carnaval de Québec). As the premier winter festival in Canada (and one of the largest in the world) it is an annual event that brings in hundreds of thousands of participants willing to brave the cold. Bonhomme, the jolly face of Carnaval, represents the appeal of the festival for both younger and older generations by giving warm bear hugs to children while cracking witty jokes with adults. During our full day of embracing everything Winter Carnival has to offer we had the opportunity to go dog sledding, ice fishing, horse-drawn sleighing and tobogganing. To warm up we devoured peanut butter and chocolate laden BeaverTails and grilled fish while sipping on hot chocolate and Caribou (a sweet Québécois alcoholic beverage composed of red wine, hard liquor and maple syrup). We noticed families and couples enjoying cross country skiing, hockey, sledding, tubing and human Foosball. If that wasn't enough the impressive ice sculptures, dotted all over the grounds, are magnificent pieces of art that can be admired up close or from a distance; some pieces were being designed/carved right before our very eyes. Overall, we thoroughly enjoyed Quebec City Winter Carnival and left wondering why more destinations around the world don't embrace winter the way Quebec City does! Dog Sledding with the Huskies Setting Off: “Alright, so what are we doing next? We’re going dog sledding! Woo!” Husky Team: The energetic huskies strain at their harnesses. Sam and Audrey command, “Go, puppies go! Steer it—good puppies, come on!” Trail Views: Wind-whipped snow, frosted pines, and the rhythmic crack of runners against packed snow—this is winter wonderland bliss. 3. Ice Fishing for Our Lunch Gear Up: “We’re going ice fishing today—ready to fish?” First Attempt: Audrey rigs her ice rod with bait. “They ate your bait… and didn’t come up. Bad fishing!” Second Try: Samuel foreshadows success—“Round two!” Seconds later, a tug on the line and fish on. Audrey admits, “I feel kind of guilty right now… I know I eat fish, but still!” 4. Campfire Cooking & Tasting the Catch Preparation: Guides set the fish on a fire-heated grate. “Now it’s time to cook it—lunch, right here!” Big Reveal: Steam wafts from the fillet as Audrey inhales, “That smells amazing.” First Bite: “Mmmm… wow! Onions, spices and just a dab of butter—really good!” The simple seasoning lets the fresh fish shine. 5. Romantic Horse-Drawn Sleigh Ride Cozy Moment: “I think it’s time for a romantic sleigh ride for two.” 6. Exploring Bonhomme’s Ice Palace Grand Entrance: “We’re getting ready to go inside Bonhomme’s Ice Palace—let’s meet the king of Carnaval!” Inside the Palace: Towers of blue ice, glittering chandeliers, and sculpted ice thrones—this crystalline fortress feels straight from a fairytale. 7. A Live Greeting from Bonhomme On-Camera Chat: Audrey asks Bonhomme where he’s from and he replies in playful French: “J’invite tout l’monde au plus grand Carnaval du monde! Joyeux Carnaval!” 8. Final Carnival Reflections Max the Husky: “Go Max, way to go!” echoes as Audrey toots a souvenir horn. Signing Off: “Unfortunately, all good things must end. We’ve had an absolutely marvelous day at the Carnaval.
