The Status of EQUITY in California’s Marijuana Industry and Policies
Session 4 of the Cannabis, Equity, & Racial Justice: Virtual Convenings This presentation reports on how Black and Brown cannabis entrepreneurs are struggling to access capital, adequate technical support and equitable regulations in order to enter and participate meaningfully in California’s marijuana industry. We provide an overview of the state equity grants program and efforts in several parts of the state to increase equity in cannabis business development. Finally, we look at practices, trends and policy ideas that are emerging to help close the racial wealth gaps caused by the criminalization of weed. Presenters include Malaki Seku Amen and Khalil Ferguson, California Urban Partnership and The Institute for MORE; Lanese Martin, The Hood Incubator; Kika Keith, Social Equity Owners and Workers Association; Robert Chlala, USC and UFCW; and Ingrid Archie, A New Way of Life
