B7 Хватит! B8 Понос-Апофеоз Egor Letov: “The Foul Youth” / “Optimizm” — in essence, this was the first unified extended album of G.O., which was recorded many times in 1985 and back then regularly released under all sorts of exotic titles: “The Best of G.O.”, “The Diarrheal Sounds of G.O. (a double, Part 1 — ‘Poganaia molodëzh’, Part 2 — ‘Optimizm’)”, “The First and Last Album of G.O.”, “The History of Omsk Punk, Part 2”, simply “Grazhdanskaya Oborona”, etc. All these recordings were monstrously varied in quality and absolutely inhumane toward the listener (instead of drums, whatever was at hand was performed and recorded — from a school satchel to a pioneer drum and a hi-hat cymbal nailed to a wooden block, the lyrics were extremely unintelligible, total cacophony, etc.). There were very strange versions as well: for example, one of the albums was almost entirely played on a homemade keyboard synthesizer (!), another one (also unfortunately not preserved) was interspersed with absurdist, ultra-short speeches and inserts a la “Kommunizm” of the middle and late period. In those recordings, apart from Kuzma and me, an indeterminate number of various people also took part, some of whose names I can’t even recall. It all ended with the group being mercilessly disbanded by state punitive organs at the end of ’85; I was forcibly sent to a psychiatric hospital, Kuzma — into the army, and all that material essentially hung in limbo for two years. It first surfaced in bearable sound on the album/compilation “The Red Album”, recorded by me alone in the summer of 1987. What are known among the people as the so-called “first” albums of G.O., “Poganaia molodëzh’” and “Optimizm”, are essentially remakes of the material from that very first ultra-long album of G.O. of 1985, recorded between January 12–22, 1988, after Kuzma Ryabinov’s return from the army and rehabilitation from it. At the same time, some tracks were completely redone (as later, a year after, the material for the album “Posev”), others were recreated using ancient (1985) tracks. The resulting albums themselves underwent multiple mixes and rearrangements, carried out by me over the following several years. The division of material into albums followed this principle: “Poganaia molodëzh’” included compositions from the repertoire of the group Posev, as well as those written in the very earliest period of G.O.’s existence (i.e., November 1984 – early spring 1985). “Optimizm” included the later pieces from spring–summer–autumn of 1985 (with the exception of such opuses as “I Am Illusory”, “Children’s World”, etc., which were successfully performed and included in “The Red Album”).
