In the early 1870's, hundreds of settlers poured into northwest Hall County, Nebraska - an area that was once considered part of the Great American desert. They came from place like New York, Ohio, and Kentucky and from Europe, to take up homestead claims and buy railroad land. What they found was a vast treeless expanse still uninhabited by Americans before 1872. They were true pioneers, building their first homes out of the prairie itself. They built up the first schools, churches and communities, and in 1886, when the Burlington railroad built northwest from Grand Island, it established the new town of Cairo. This film tells the story of some of those earliest settlers....more than one hundred were veterans of the Civil War. Dr. Robert Manley, Nebraska historian and author, provides insight about northwest Hall County, the building of the railroad, and the establishment of the new town of Cairo.
