Polvorones (Mantecaditos)

The polvorones (also known as Mantecaditos) are very similar to a shortbread cookie with a buttery flavor and crumbly texture topped with guava paste or sprinkles. Traditionally, these cookies are prepared with lard and butter. This is why they are referred to as Mantecaditos. The Spanish term for lard is “Manteca.” Today, the polvorones are made with vegetable shortening and butter. Since I am not fond of vegetable shortening, I use cream cheese and butter for this recipe. If you prefer to use the shortening, then add ½ cup of vegetable shortening and omit the cream cheese.
