Henry Purcell (1659-1695) is remembered as one of England's finest composers, alongside William Byrd and Thomas Tallis. And unlike George Frideric Handel or Gottfried Finger, Purcell was a native Englishman. He was a versatile musician: a writer of operas, anthems, chamber works, keyboard solos, et cetera. He was current with the innovations on the European Continent, for he incorporated the bold sounds of Louis XIV's court musicians as well as the operatic coloratura of the northern Italian singers. Like Mozart a century later, Purcell began as a child prodigy, and matured into a composer of tremendous output who died young at the age of 36. I have compiled a tiny sampling of his instrumental music, mostly from this two best-known operas: "The Fairy Queen" and "DIdo and Aeneas." The inspiration for the Fairy Queen was an Anonymous interpretation of William Shakespeare's Midsummer Night's Dream. The incidental music from both operas are for the most part direct and simplistic in nature. In contrast, the keyboard pieces, which were likely inspired by the likes of Charles Mouton and other early French Baroque lutenists, were more improvisatory. I used MIDI files uploaded by various individuals mostly to the website IMSLP.org. I extensively edited each file to emulate a late 17th century chamber orchestra of no more than 20 musicians that includes natural trumpets, violins, violas, cellos, theorbo, harpsichord, positive organ, sackbuts, oboes, bassoons and tympani.
