A week ago I shared “10 Minutes of Pure English Organ Tranquility” — five meditative gems from In The Cloisters by Wilson Manhire. Many of you loved that calm, reflective atmosphere. Today… we change mood. This time it’s not tranquil — it’s a short but spirited English organ march full of character and charm. I love marches. They always make me smile — and they are always a challenge. Even when the notes themselves are not overly difficult, the real art lies elsewhere: How do you make it truly sound like a march? It’s all about: • shaping the space between the notes • daring articulation • energy and lift • controlled rhythmic drive Some notes must be slightly shorter, others carried just a little longer. That subtle shaping gives the music its pulse, its confidence, its joy. Even in Lent, we are allowed a smile once in a while. Tomorrow we return to reflective music, today, we march. Manhire spent most of his life in Cornwall and was active as an accompanist and composer in South West England. His music is practical, lyrical, and written for real church use — music meant to live, not to gather dust. 📖 You can download the full book (free) here: https://buymeacoffee.com/rienschalkwi... 🎹 Organ used: Royal Hospital School Grand Organ (via Hauptwerk) If you enjoy rediscovering forgotten English organ music, you’re very welcome here.
