Leaders leaving STORYLINE: Iraqi President Jalal Talabani said in Baghdad on Sunday there was unanimity amongst political leaders on the withdrawal of US forces from the country by the end-of-the-year deadline. Talabani was speaking after a meeting with Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki and other senior Iraqi figures. However, the Iraqi government is still weighing whether some US troops should stay to help train the country''''s security forces. Talabani said he hoped that a meeting between Iraqi political leaders, scheduled for next week, would enable an agreement to be reached on the matter. "We have discussed in our meeting how to make the next meeting of heads of the political blocs successful. The meeting which is due to be held next Tuesday evening is to discuss the American troop''''s withdrawal as there is unanimity on the withdrawal. And the topic of trainers (US training of local security forces) will be discussed in the said meeting and God willing we hope to a reach a unanimous decision in the next meeting," Talabani said. Last month, US military officials said that the number of American troops in Iraq was scheduled to fall to roughly 40,000 by the end of September as the US winds down the Iraq war. They confirmed that they were on track to meet the goal of withdrawing all American troops from Iraq by the end of the year. When the US officially ended its combat mission in Iraq on September 1, 2010, it had about 50,000 troops there. Talks are under way with Iraq to consider leaving at least a few thousand US troops in the country to help train Iraqi forces.
