There are some myths about Hiatal Hernia that are prevalent, but false. Let's dive into them. ➡️ Book a consultation HERE: https://rootcausemedicalclinics.com/h... Call us directly at: 727-335-0400 1. You must be on a PPI antacid medication. PPIs suppress acid but reflux can be due to too little acid or even from bile from your gallbladder. In either of those cases the PPI will not help. If you're over 40 or under a lot of stress it increases the odds for having too little acid in your stomach. There are many side effects of PPIs you should be aware of. There are several videos in which I review them. 2. You can't diagnose a hiatal hernia without an endoscopy. Endoscopies are frequently used but they miss "catching" a hiatal hernia 40 to 50% of the time. Other options include manometry or barium swallow along with a symptom based suspicion based on symptoms, especially symptoms of acid reflux and upper abdominal pressure. 3. Surgery is the only solution to really fix it. In moderate to severe cases this can be true, but most people are in the mild to moderate zone and are still recommended surgery. The failure rate of surgery is 30 to 40% over several years and a horrible side effect called Dumping Syndrome occurs in about 20% of individuals who go through surgery. The truth is that many people benefit from postural retraining, dietary change, microbiome support, vagus nerve rebalancing and breathwork. And I can tell you that's what we see here with our patients. 4. It's caused solely due to overweight and a poor diet. This does increase risk, but we see plenty of patients of ideal weight who still suffer. What has to be examined includes the root cause of increased intra-abdominal pressure, vagus nerve dysfunction, diaphragm weakening or poor posture, food sensitivities, and microbiome imbalance as mentioned above. 5. If there's no heartburn, you don't have a hiatal hernia. This is incorrect. You can suffer from shortness of breath, heart palpitations, bloating, silent reflux (LRP) and delayed stomach emptying (gastroparesis) and have no obvious heartburn. 6. You won't improve using natural methods. A small sliding hiatal hernia (the most common type) can absolutely improve and/or become less symptomatic with the following: Rebalance the pressure imbalances - meaning address the microbiome, constipation, SIBO and health of the sphincters (valves) in the GI tract. Diaphragm strengthening Weight loss Dietary improvement - eliminating processed foods and identified food sensitivities Vagus nerve support My team and I work with many patients suffering with hiatal hernia and these myths can stop people from reaching out for natural methods because they think they won't work.
