Indians obsessing over self-medication comes from various aspects, including financial constraints, cultural beliefs, and a general distrust of the medical system. Many people take medicines without consulting a doctor, believing that they can treat mild symptoms like a cold or a sore throat on their own. However, self-medication can lead to unintended side effects and even serious health risks. Experts agree that this practice is often based on unreliable internet information. Taking medicine without a proper diagnosis can do more harm than good. For example, people tend to take antibiotics on their own for viral illnesses without realising that the wrong dosage can lead to drug resistance. Even common medications like decongestants, cough syrups, and paracetamol can cause severe side effects if taken without guidance. Overuse of decongestants, for instance, could lead to atrophic rhinitis, a condition where the inner lining of the nose gets damaged. Taking excessive paracetamol could harm the liver and even cause toxicity. Researchers have stated that self-medication and non-doctor prescribing of drugs is common in developing countries like India and Nepal. In a study, published in the peer-reviewed journal BMJ Primary Care, researchers found that people living in Pokhara valley, Nepal, took drugs, especially antimicrobials, without any proper duration. "Education to help patients decide on the appropriateness of self-medication is required," they concluded. https://www.indiatoday.in/health/stor...
