How to Manage Congestive Heart Failure

So what is congestive heart failure? Congestive heart failure is when your heart can’t pump blood strong enough to be circulated throughout your body. The heart is still working, but it cannot handle the amount of blood that it should. The blood builds up or goes to other parts of your body and most of the time it is around your lungs, your legs and your feet. So when you start seeing your legs and feet swelling, then there is a high chance that there is fluid buildup in your lungs. What are the most common signs and symptoms of congestive heart failure? As mentioned above, you will see swelling of the legs, ankles and feet. And since there is fluid buildup in your lungs, you also have shortness of breath. You feel pain or pressure around your chest. Because you have fluid in your lungs, it is difficult to lay down and Sleep at night. You’ll feel like you’re drowning. Because you have swelling, that means there is fluid buildup, right? So you will also experience weight gain. Now it is difficult to move when you have weight gain and so you’ll also feel easily fatigued. It is difficult to move around and do your day-to-day activities. The lack of sleep also contributes to why you’re always feeling tired. Oh, but I am sure that you are aware of this signs and symptoms if you are diagnosed with congestive heart failure. But the most important question is: what should you do? Unfortunately, there is no cure for heart failure yet. But, through medication and lifestyle changes, you will be able to control the symptoms of congestive heart failure. With medication, you need to talk to your doctor. They will prescribe the right medication for you. Write down the dosage and the time when you need to take them. As for lifestyle changes, there are several things that you can do. First is staying active and regular exercise. I will make a separate video for exercises appropriate for congestive heart failure. Second is a healthy diet. Avoid bad cholesterol and salt or sodium. Your doctor will often tell you to lower down your salt or sodium intake because salt retains water. When there is water retention, then there is high blood volume which overworks the heart. With lowering your salt or sodium intake, you will see immediate results. You will be able to breathe better, and your legs won’t be as swollen. But immediately after you eat something salty, you will see your legs swell, and you will have a hard time breathing again. It is also very important to monitor your weight. So you need to get a good weighing scale. You need to contact your health provider if you have a weight gain of two or 3 pounds overnight or in a period of 24 hours or more than 5 pounds in a week. It is difficult to sleep flat on your bed when you have congestive heart failure. You will feel like you are drowning or suffocating. Try propping up your head with two pillows or sleep on your side so you can breathe better there are a few people who might sleep better on the recliner but the downside is your legs are still a lot lower than your heart so your legs are going to be swollen and won’t shrink as much compared to when you are sleeping on your bed. So as much as possible, try to sleep on your bed with your head elevated and your legs propped up. Avoid things that will unnecessarily elevate your blood pressure and heart rate such as tobacco products, alcohol or recreational drugs. This also includes stress management. When you are stressed, you’ll have rapid or irregular heartbeat, which overworked your heart. When you feel your heart rate going up, try doing your deep breathing exercises. I am going to teach you to techniques. First one is a quick one. Take three quick inhalation’s, and one long exhalation. And the other one is breathing in for five seconds then hold for five seconds, and then breathe out for five seconds.
