Many kids who are labeled lazy, defiant, or unmotivated are actually shutting down. I know — because I was one of them. In this video, I share my story as a misunderstood student with learning difficulties and ADHD, and how those experiences shaped the way I teach today as The Reading Hacker. If you’re a parent or educator working with a child who avoids work, disengages, melts down, or seems “checked out,” this conversation is for you. This video explores ADHD, dyslexia, learning differences, and why shutdown behaviors are often a sign of missing skills — not missing effort. In this video, we talk about: ✔️ Why shutdown and avoidance are often misinterpreted as behavior problems ✔️ How ADHD and learning differences show up in school ✔️ The long-term impact of shame and misunderstanding ✔️ Why “trying harder” is rarely the solution ✔️ Three practical ways to better support struggling, misunderstood learners Key Takeaways: 🔹 Pause before punishing — ask what the behavior is communicating 🔹 Look for the missing skill, not the missing motivation 🔹 Find the “why” — what matters to the child and what keeps them going This approach is especially important for: • Parents of kids who avoid reading or schoolwork • Teachers working with disengaged or “defiant” students • Anyone supporting children with ADHD, dyslexia, or learning differences 🎁 Free Resource: Struggles to Strengths If you’re trying to understand why a child is struggling — and what to do next — I created a free resource to help. 👉 Download my free “Struggles to Strengths” guide here: 👉 https://subscribepage.io/5x9iII This guide helps parents and educators: Reframe struggles without blame Identify what might be getting in the way Take clear, supportive next steps ⏱️ Chapters 0:00 I wasn’t a bad student, I was misunderstood 0:35 Early school struggles & constant timeouts 1:20 The art class story (and shame) 4:10 IEP, learning disabilities, and switching schools 7:10 Adult ADHD diagnosis & the “lost generation” of women 10:05 Takeaway #1 – Pause before punishing 11:35 Takeaway #2 – What skill might be missing? 13:00 Takeaway #3 – Find their WHY 15:10 Book recommendations for ADHD & executive functioning 17:40 Bringing it all together + final encouragement 📚 Resources Mentioned (Bookshop.org) I’ve linked the books mentioned in this video through Bookshop.org, which supports independent bookstores.
