Jean Sibelius' Violin Concerto had a troubled birth: the 1904 Helsinki premiere featured an inadequately prepared soloist and received mostly negative reviews, prompting Sibelius to revise the work extensively before its successful 1905 Berlin premiere with Richard Strauss conducting. The composer's affinity for the violin stemmed from his youthful aspiration to become a great violinist, and though he began training too late for a performance career, he poured that passion into this concerto's fiendishly difficult solo part. The work features dark, somber orchestral colors and original formal structures: the first movement eschews traditional development in favor of elaborating each theme upon presentation, the Adagio contrasts dreamy reflection with turbulent passion, and the energetic finale in rondo form evokes polonaise and Romani dance rhythms while demanding the soloist's full technical prowess. Music Director Thomas Søndergård led the Minnesota Orchestra with soloist James Ehnes in this performance on January 10, 2026.
