Three Fingers Lookout is possibly one of the most incredible backpacking destinations in Washington. Since the road is closed, many mountain bike the first 9 miles. Then you hike through dense forest for 2.5 miles till you reach a wonderful lake called Saddle Lake. Once at the lake, the scenery starts to become incredible. Pools of water and enormous mountains scatter the landscape as you trek through the final 5 miles of the hike. The journey is a long one, but the endless views keep you motivated. Finally, you start to reach some snow. The traverses across the glaciers start easy, but get progressively harder. Soon, you’ll need an ice axe. You’ll get another view of the lookout before you traverse to the other side of the peaks and complete the last stretch of the hike. Finally, one last snow field lies between you and the lookout. Then you scramble up some rocks until you reach a set of ladders that are attached to bolts in the rock. Suddenly, you’re at the lookout. The lookout is strapped down to the narrow peak, and is said to shake during windy storms. Inside, there’s a bed, numerous books, and various other cool trinkets. Four people can sleep comfortably inside the lookout, but apparently as many as eight have slept inside the lookout. On the East side of the lookout is a massive drop of 2,000 feet, while the West side more gently slopes down 1,000 feet. Sunsets are incredible. The Olympic Mountains stand wonderfully in the distance. There simply is nothing else that compares to this majestic lookout.
