First of all I’d like to send a special thanks to Kere Heperi who is an educator at the MTG Tai Ahuriri ( Hawke's Bay ) theatre, art gallery & museum. Who has been an incredible help with this story . With her amazing photos . Napier is one of a number of major ports found on the east coast of New Zealand . It is dominated by a large bluff at one end , with black gravel beaches covered in driftwood , stretching as far as the eye can see in both directions Atop of this bluff was built the Gore Browne Barracks , named after the Governor of New Zealand ,Thomas Robert Gore Browne. Built in 1858 it housed the 65th Regiment , the barracks served as the military headquarters for British troops in Hawkes Bay till 18 April 1867. Later becoming the refuge for new immigrants and frail . It was the demolished to make way for the Napier hospital . The cannon was on display outside the Drill Hall after being transferred from Fort Britomart , but it could’ve also been housed before that at the Barracks ? The Drill Hall was constructed in 1886-1887 for the Napier Naval brigade at Port Ahuriri, then relocated to Coote Road on Bluff Hill in 1889, where it was then re-erected with some extensions . Today this historic cannon sits proudly at the intersection of Tennyson street and Marine Parade , on the foreshore of Napier . Manufactured in 1813 by the Scottish Carron Company . It’s a 24 pounder its markings bearing the reign King George Ill. Serial 80525
