A humanoid robot at the International Space Station has become the first robot to speak in space. The talking humanoid, which is about 30 centimeters in height, was developed by Japanese companies to serve as a companion to astronauts at the station. With software installed in it, the humanoid can conduct a conversation. It traveled with the Japanese cargo ship Konotori-4 that docked at the space station in early August. Footage released on Thursday shows the robot being activated on August 21st. Making human-like gestures, the robot says "August 21st 2013, this is the first step for robots towards hopes for the future." The developers of the humanoid say it is the first time for a robot to have spoken in space. The communication skills of the robot will be tested in a scheduled conversation with Japanese astronaut Koichi Wakata, who is due to start a 6-months stay at the station from November.
