Pruning young shade trees is sometimes referred to as tree training because it helps establish a strong branch structure that is more resistant to storm damage and may reduce the need for pruning as trees grow older.  The goals when training young trees include establishing a strong, dominant central leader, promoting good branch spacing along the trunk, maintaining a good distribution of branches on all sides of the canopy, and removing dead, damaged, or diseased branches.  In addition, it is important to leave some temporary lower branches to support the development of the trunk.  Pruning cuts should be made just outside the branch collar and branch bark ridge to avoid damaging remaining branches and encourage pruning cuts to heal.  The best time to prune most trees is while they are dormant in late winter or early spring.    #arkansas #pruning #treecare
