The Royal Stoke University Hospital (NHS Trust) is using 3D Printing to enable more comprehensive pre-operative planning for their anaplastology cases. By creating facial prostheses based directly on a 3D-printed replica of the patient’s anatomy, the time in the operating theater is shortened significantly. Moreover, it results in a much more better result, giving patients the confidence they need to accept and embrace their new appearance. After the resection of a large facial tumor, Gillian was confronted with a failed reconstruction. “She had had such a large tumour that half of the roof of her mouth had to be removed, and part of her cheek,” recalls Dr. Julie Strzala, maxillofacial prosthetist at the Royal Stoke University Hospital. Dr. Strzala and the team of prosthetists at the Hospital gave Gillian new hope by proposing a removable solution that restored the symmetry of her face. Based on her CT scans, they used Materialise software to mirror the soft tissue and structure of the healthy side of her face and create a 3D-printed model of it. The resulting model was used as a mould to create the prosthesis out of traditional materials. Interested in pre-operative planning for cranio-maxillofacial surgery?
