ON THE CORNER BASE IN NEW TAIPEI CITY, TAIWAN VINYL ONLY HOST BY / purpose_analog / kengaicoffea ------------ About DJ Vicar / djvicar ------------ DJ Vicar has dedicated his life to promoting soul, funk, and hip-hop music in Taiwan. With 20 years of experience as a DJ, he has become a cornerstone of the local music scene. Known as the “Black Music Evangelist” & “ TAIWAN Music Digger” in Taiwan, Vicar’s journey began in the early 2000s when access to music was limited. He worked as the manager of the legendary Taiwanese hip-hop record store, “Da Project Records,” which became a cradle for hip-hop culture on the island. After Da Project Records’ closure, Vicar founded his own record store, Soul Amazin', which continues to serve as a gateway for many Taiwanese listeners to discover Black music. Beyond retail, he co-founded the independent music label Floatingmusic with his partners, further cementing his influence on Taiwan’s music landscape. VICAR play with a lot of DJs And not only play,he also share Taiwan music on vinyl To them Like 🇺🇸 AFRIKA BAMBAATAA, DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Clark Kent, DJ Shortkut, DJ Numark, Kero One 🇨🇦 Skratch Bastid, Flipout 🇯🇵 DJ MURO, DJ KOCO, DJ KENTA, DJ MITSU THE BEATS, DJ DECKSTREAM, DJ BUNTA, DJ SHOTA, DJ SHU-G, DJ SHINGO 🇰🇷 DJ Soulscape ------------ During the post-show Q&A session, DJ Vicar shared his perspective on Black music. “To me, Black music is more of an umbrella term rather than a single genre,” he explained. “It’s like how we wouldn’t categorize city pop as just one style of music. Black music is incredibly inclusive—spanning funk, soul, hip-hop, and even jazz. In fact, its influence is embedded in nearly 80% of today’s popular music! So, isn’t modern pop music also a form of Black music in its own way?” he added with a laugh. ------------ A Vinyl-Only Set with 7-Inch Records ------------ For this special event, Vicar crafted his entire set using 7-inch vinyl records—a deliberate choice that added both charm and challenge to his performance. When asked about this decision, he explained, “My music collection for this topic had more material available on 7-inch records. Plus, performing with 7-inch vinyl is technically more demanding, which I enjoy!” Interestingly, Vicar opted not to use any effects or sound color during his set. “I wanted to present my DJing in the purest form possible,” he said. The result was an unfiltered and authentic experience that highlighted his technical skills and deep connection to music. ------------ Tools of the Trade: DJ Vicar’s Gear ------------ DJ Vicar’s love for analog equipment is evident in his carefully curated setup. His go-to turntable is the iconic Technics SL1200 series, which he regards as timeless regardless of the model generation. For mixing, he prefers the Vestax PMC 07 Pro mixer, praising its sound quality and ergonomic design. When it comes to cartridges and needles, Vicar swears by the SHURE M447—a. “I stocked up on enough needles before they were discontinued to last me a lifetime,” he joked. He also pays close attention to needle pressure, adjusting it between 2.5 to 3.5 grams to minimize wear on his records. One unique piece of gear in his arsenal is a custom-made 7-inch adapter. “A friend from Japan crafted this for me based on my preferences,” he shared. “It’s made entirely of metal and is much heavier than standard adapters, which suits my style perfectly.” ------------ ABOUT DJ Vicar DJ Vicar 🇺🇸 DJ Jazzy Jeff, DJ Clark Kent, DJ Shortkut, DJ Numark, Kero One 🇯🇵 DJ MURO, DJ KOCO, DJ KENTA, DJ MITSU THE BEATS, DJ DECKSTREAM, DJ BUNTA, DJ SHOTA, DJ SHU-G, DJ SHINGO 🇰🇷 DJ Soulscape 在臺灣人稱黑樂傳教士 早期任職於臺灣傳奇嘻哈唱片行 大計劃唱片擔任店長一職 在資訊不發達的2000年初 便致力於引進嘻哈音樂與黑人音樂 也使大計劃唱片 成為臺灣嘻哈音樂人的重要搖籃之一 大計劃唱片宣告終止後 VIcar便創立自身唱片行品牌 Soul Amazin' Music 繼續推進新一代接觸黑人音樂 AFTER show QA Q. 想請教VICAR 對於Black Music 的理解與想法 對我來說Black Music黑樂比較像是一個統稱 不是一個類型,就像我們不會說City Pop是一個音樂類型,Black Music對我來說包容性很強從Funk Soul到Hip Hop甚至Jazz 但對我來說他其實包容的更廣 就如同這些元素早已淺藏在當今幾乎80%的音樂內!
