Considerations when using Forklift Mounted Access Platforms. IMPORTANT NOTE: This video is NOT intended to replace Training, the information on your Access platforms’ operator’s manual, nor your organisations Health & Safety Risk Assessment. Before you begin to use a Forklift Mounted Access Platform: 1) Forklift Access Platforms should only be used for unplanned work. 2) Both your forklift and Access Platform attachment must have a current 6-month LOLER. 3) The total weight of the platform with people and tools/equipment in it must not exceed 50% of the actual capacity of the forklift that it is attached. 4) Forklift Access Platforms must only be used on level, hard standing; when windspeed is below the manufacturer’s guidance (see your Access Platform or Operator manual for this), and away from overhead electricity cables and pylons – at least 9 meters away from wooden pylons and 15 meters away from metal ones, after full extension of truck, Cage. 5) Do your pre use checks on both your Forklift and Access Platform, then isolate side shift and tilt control levers, to help avoid their usage, only using the Lift lever. 6) Ensure that you have the correct PPE -: Suitable Harness with restraint lanyard; Safety Boots; High Vis vest; Helmet with Chin strap and Gloves. 7) Check your Harness and PPE: your harness and lanyard should be in LOLER and not have any cuts or frays, and should not have any damage, the same goes for your karabiners and hooks. When Using a Forklift Access Platform: 8) Ensure that the Access Platform is correctly fitted to the Forklift (see your access platforms operator instructions for further details). 9) Do a “Cold Run” - Get the Forklift Mounted Access Platform into the correct position without anyone inside it, then apply the hand brake and Neutral (this is how they must stay until the operator has left the access platform and is a safe distance away from it). This helps prevent the operator from being in a situation that they may want to reach beyond the confines of the Access Platform – which they must never do. 10) Make sure that people in the Access Platform are not able to reach neither hazardous moving parts of the forklift nor the forklifts controls. 11) When getting into the forklift the operator must immediately connect their lanyard to the correct anchorage points, which should be clearly labelled. 12) Once an operator is in the Access Platform the Forklift operator must not leave the forklift with the person still in the access platform. 13) The Operator must hold the internal handrail when being raised or lowered in the Access Platform, this is to prevent them from suffering potential hand crush injuries. 14) Communication is key when using an access platform; you need to use predetermined means of communication (verbal, hand signs or both), ideally in a 3-person team consisting of the Forklift Operator; the person in the Access Platform and an Observer/controller. After you have finished using a Forklift Access Platform 15) Check all Equipment used to ensure that it has not sustained any damage, and then disconnect your Access Platform and store it in a suitable safe location.
