The TNM staging system for lung cancer is as follows: T (Tumor) TX: Tumor cannot be assessed T0: No evidence of tumor T1: Tumor Less or equal to 3 cm, surrounded by lung or pleura T1a: Tumor Less or equal to 1 cm T1b: Tumor Greater than 1 cm but Less or equal to 2 cm T1c: Tumor Greater than 2 cm but Less or equal 3 cm T2: Tumor Greater than 3 cm but Less or equal to 5 cm, or tumor with any of the following: Involves main bronchus, but Greater or equal to2 cm from carina Invades visceral pleura Associated with atelectasis or obstructive pneumonitis T2a: Tumor Greater than 3 cm but Less or equal to 4 cm T2b: Tumor Greater than 4 cm but Less or equal to 5 cm T3: Tumor Greater than 5 cm but Less or equal to 7 cm, or tumor with any of the following: Involves main bronchus, Less than 2 cm from carina Invades parietal pleura Invades chest wall Associated with diaphragmatic involvement T4: Tumor greater than 7 cm, or tumor with any of the following: Invades mediastinum Invades heart Invades great vessels Invades trachea Invades esophagus Invades vertebral body Invades carina N (Nodal) NX: Nodes cannot be assessed N0: No nodal metastasis N1: Metastasis to ipsilateral peribronchial and/or hilar nodes N2: Metastasis to ipsilateral mediastinal and/or subcarinal nodes N3: Metastasis to contralateral mediastinal and/or hilar nodes, or to supraclavicular and/or scalene nodes M (Metastasis) MX: Metastasis cannot be assessed M0: No distant metastasis M1: Distant metastasis present M1a: Separate tumor nodule(s) in contralateral lung M1b: Distant metastasis outside lung Stage Grouping Stage I: T1-2 N0 M0 Stage II: T1-2 N1 M0, or T3 N0 M0 Stage III: T1-3 N2 M0, or T3 N1 M0, or T4 N0-1 M0 Stage IV: T1-4 N0-3 M1 Note: This is a general overview of the TNM staging system for lung cancer.
