Windows 11 is Still Unsecure Educational Purpose Only. The Sticky Keys security flaw is a well-known method of bypassing Windows' password protection. The vulnerability exploits a built-in Windows accessibility feature. An attacker with physical access to a computer can use a Windows installation or recovery media to open a command prompt before the operating system fully loads. From there, they can replace the Sticky Keys executable file (sethc.exe) with the command prompt executable (cmd.exe). Once the system is rebooted, pressing the Shift key five times at the login screen will launch a command prompt with administrative privileges instead of the Sticky Keys menu. This allows the attacker to create new user accounts, change passwords for existing accounts, or otherwise gain full control of the system without knowing the original password. This vulnerability highlights the importance of physical security and device encryption, such as BitLocker, to protect against such attacks.
