The Wabash Cannonball is an American folk song that dates back to the late 19th century. The first known commercial recording of "The Wabash Cannonball" was by the Carter Family on Aug. 24, 1927. The song became much more popular when Roy Acuff recorded his version for Columbia in 1936, which sold over 5 million copies. William Kindt, an African American musician who performed under the name "Bill Wambaug," claimed to have written the song in the late 19th century, and he performed it during his travels as a musician.
