"The Challenge of Building a Hospital in Ghana — A Lifelong Dream" by Oheneba Boachie-Adjei, M.D., orthopedic surgeon, Hospital for Special Surgery. The lecture took place September 2013 at Mayo Clinic Health System in Eau Claire as part of the annual 'Imagine' lecture series. Dr. Oheneba Boachie-Adjei came to the United States from his native Ghana in 1972 with only $12 in his pockets. A stranger in a strange land, he took a minimum-wage factory job and enrolled into New York's Brooklyn College. Upon graduating summa cum laude, he earned a spot in Columbia University's College of Physicians and Surgeons, eventually emerging as one of this country's leading orthopedic and spine surgeons. But Dr. Boachie-Adjei's story doesn't end there. He founded the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine (FOCUS) to provide orthopedic care to underserved populations in West Africa and other lesser developed nations. His efforts have earned him the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons' Humanitarian Award, the Hospital for Special Surgery Wholeness of Life Award, the Albert Schweitzer University Science and Peace Gold Medal, and the Scoliosis Research Society Blount Service Award for unique humanitarian services.
